What is Domestic Wellness?
To help athletes, wives and their families achieve success beyond sports, and avoid domestic violence, the Professional Sports Wives has launched the Domestic Wellness League, a nationwide network of therapists and mental health professionals to counsel peers on:
- Anger Management and Domestic Violence
- Sexual Harassment, Infidelity and Divorce
- Co-Parenting, Family and In-Law Conflicts
- Forced Early Retirement and Loss of Income
- Grief, Loss, Anxiety, Stress, Loss of Confidence and Self-Esteem
- Chronic Pain and Declining Health
- Substance Abuse and more.
Why: “Because of fame and fortune there’s little sympathy from critics of pro athletes who find themselves in trouble or who have broken the law especially due to domestic issues,” according to Gena Pitts, Executive Director and Founder of Professional Sports Wives Association.
What: Professional Sports Wives Association is a national, charitable organization for wives of athletes, coaches, executives and their families in all leagues, including the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, PGA Tour and more.
“Young athletes have to grow up quickly in the unstable sports entertainment industry,” said Pitts, “and they haven’t had time to mature and develop life skills; they are learning from mistakes in public and in real-time,” she said. “We are providing resources to help rookies and our peers navigate lifestyle challenges, and achieve domestic wellness,” said Pitts.
“Domestic wellness is a lifestyle of mental, physical, financial, spiritual and relationship health. It is vital to one’s professional and personal success during and after their sports career,” says Porsha Jones, Licensed Marriage Family Therapist, and advisor to the Professional Sports Wives Association.
“My goal as a marriage and family therapist is to help equip pro athletes and their families with the knowledge and ability to acquire these lifestyle skills. I lead with genuine caring, empathy and provide a safe, confidential space to allow this process to succeed,” said Jones, an LMFT, with GROW Counseling.
When: The Domestic Wellness League will enable athletes, wives and their families have convenient access to marriage and family counseling mobile devices, including their new mobile app launching this year.
